How did Kids That Compost begin?

“Although KTC started locally in our community, I quickly had friends in several other neighborhoods that said, “we want a team!” In September 2020, we will officially be one year old! We are now serving 26 communities via integrated school programs and weekly residential curbside pick-ups. My long-term dream is that Kids That Compost will eventually teach the world — city by city, community by community,  state by state — how to preserve our planet.”

Learn About Becoming A Composting Kid

Our Team

Mona Barber

Founder

From a young age, my family and I have worked in building a family business while being kind to others and spreading love in the world. I’ve had many opportunities to give back to our community and those experiences have made me who I am today. As a mother, a business leader and mentor, I’m proud to have the opportunity to empower our youth to think outside themselves. Kids That Compost gives young people a sense of purpose and empowerment. They are literally changing the world, one bucket at a time! Someday, when these kids apply to college, after years of leadership experience, community outreach and positivity, they will have done something monumental!

Youth Positions

We encourage the kids to get involved in youth positions to create leadership skills that can be used for the rest of their lives.

I have been with Kids That Compost from the very start. It has been great watching this organization flourish into a wonderful community filled with caring and supportive people. I am so proud to part of the youth group at KTC and I really feel I am making a difference in the world.

Kids That Compost means so much to me, including helping the earth and being a part of a group with a purpose bigger than us. Helping with a small part making a difference.

My sisters and I headed the Kids That Compost team in Victorian Village. We can’t believe that our summer service project has now been adopted in other communities all around central Ohio. We are so happy that Kids That Compost is decreasing landfill waste and directly helping the environment. We are kids and we created change!

I like Kids That Compost because it is saving the environment. Composting can help take methane gas out of the sky and help nourish gardens.

The health of the planet is the main reason we do compost. Trying to battle the exponentially decreasing health of our planet motivates us. We are living in one of the most urgent times my generation has and will ever see, so composting is a great way/was a great way for my family to do their part.

Emily, 15, Upper Arlington

Composting makes me feel that I am part of the solution to the climate crisis. That in some small way, any action we take can make a difference.

Mark, Curbside Subscriber, Short North

[Being part of Kids That Compost makes me] feel like even though I am one person, I am still helping and making an impact on the earth.

Emerson, 13, Short North

Composting is something that I believe very passionately in as it is an easy solution to be part of the waste/consumption puzzle.
